AkronReads is making progress on its strategic plan

Reading opens doors to endless possibilities for children in our community, and we are working hard to make AkronReads the best it can be for everyone involved, from our volunteer tutors and business partners, to the APS principals and site coordinators, to parents and of course, our students.

The AkronReads Steering Committee worked together in 2012 to develop a two-year strategic plan to help involve new businesses, organizations and individuals as tutors; and to tell our story to the community to continue building this important program.

Some of our achievements over the past two years include:

  • Recruiting tutors from new businesses and community groups to help our students with their literacy skills
  • Developing a marketing plan to share information about the Akron Reads program, tutoring opportunities, the impact of Akron Reads, and success stories with members of the community
  • Making it easier for AkronReads volunteers and APS coordinators to share information
  • Proving new orientation materials, resources, and training options for new tutoring volunteers
  • Developing new ways to evaluate AkronReads and the progress of our students
  • Provide day time and after-school option for Akron Reads tutoring sessions

Literacy is the cornerstone of a child’s future success, and research shows that student achievement is closely tied to how well kids can read by the time they reach third grade. AkronReads is helping to prepare students for this pivotal time in a child’s education that will have long-lasting effects throughout the rest of their schooling and beyond.

AkronReads supports Ohio’s Third Grade Reading Guarantee

AkronReads works closely with APS schools to provide targeted reading interventions for students who are most in need of help. We focus on students who need extra reading practice and give them personal attention, creating a positive experience centered around reading.

We need volunteers now more than ever

The Ohio Department of Education is requiring all third grade students meet minimum requirements for reading proficiency or risk being held back. The Third Grade Reading Guarantee is designed to ensure that all students, grades kindergarten through third grade are on track for reading success.

Currently, nearly one-third of APS elementary students are not on track to reach these goals.

By targeting those students most in need of assistance and providing them with specially trained tutors, AkronReads not only helps APS adhere to the mandates of the Third Grade Reading Guarantee,we make a significant impact on the future of our children.
